Lightning fast time to interactive with server side rendering on the homepage

ajoslin

Hopefully Staples will hook up their CDN to the homepage soon and make it even faster

Nice work, 25201GH2! How was your experience with Next? We started with it on a project, found too much friction and migrated back to Maki :joy:

ajoslin

Mostly good experience 09HF4JLV. The biggest problem with server-side-rendering is the hosting: dealing with web server CPU load at high traffic is a lot more trouble than setting up a static server plus CDN

ajoslin

and also having to set up fine-grained caching

ajoslin

I'm probably not going to use Next.js again. On future projects, instead I'm using preact with static prerendered routes and webpack bundle splitting

ajoslin

Preact is 3kb and mostly React compatible, it's the best thing I've found for building an app where you have to deliver code (which forbids "weird" frameworks)

martindale

That sounds very much like what our client-side implementation has turned into; a flat "React-compatible" mapping of state -> UI, but we'll need someone to head that up moving forward as I transition to platform and partnerships. :3

Looks like they rolled back the release... must have been a test (I'm not working with their team anymore)
